Lafayette’s wrestling team prepares for Districts to stay undefeated
February 12, 2016
It has been a spectacular season for the varsity Lancer wrestlers this year. They are a perfect 15-0 this year for varsity meets when they faced only one other opponent. The team has also dominated tournaments as well. Some notable first place finishes in tournaments for Lafayette include finishing first in the Parkway South Classic and the Winnetonka Invitational. But with the regular season behind them, the team is focused on their biggest goal.
“We have had a great season in tournaments and dual meets, that has shown our kids where we stand in comparison with the rest of the state,” head coach Jonathan Sumner said. “Earning a state plaque and even further winning a state championship is a deep task in class four wrestling, but we are confident if our kids go out and compete and we have a great next two weeks, we and our kids will not be disappointed with the season.”
The team’s seniors, which include Chase Behrndt, Tim Bogar, Al Brown, Jordan Carson, John Fogarty, Brendan Mckenna, Noah Robinson, Alex Wier and Michael Wozniak have all contributed with experience and talent to help the future Lancer wrestlers gain the knowledge they need to succeed later down the road.
“Having nine seniors in our line up, which includes many who are multiple year starters, is a pretty cool thing. They lead the way for the rest of the team most of the time. It makes it really easy to sit back and let them handle things most of the time. It is an extremely motivated group with great leadership who is on a mission this season, and we look forward to seeing how they finish,” Sumner said.
Lafayette will travel to SLUH high school on Feb. 12 and Feb. 13 to compete in the District tournament and the first match is set to start around 5:30 p.m. and then the festivities will pick up around 10 a.m. the next day. The Lancers will be one of 17 teams at the tournament and if they want to pull away with another dominant victory they’re going to have to wrestle like they have all season.
“The key for this upcoming weekend is for our kids to go out each match with confidence and do what they have been doing all year. We have put in the time, our kids have worked as hard as anyone around the state, and they are ready to compete. Our kids just need to go out and compete and the rest will take care of itself,” Sumner said.
