Second Late Start Monday saw no noticeable improvements

The second Late Start Monday of the year was on September 9,  but the results were not better than the first.

The Late Start days were implemented to replace monthly half days, and they make school start a hour and a half later than normal every other Monday. However, this extra time has caused some major problems for students.

The first Late Start Day, which was on August 26, led to only 85 students being late to first hour. During the most recent Late Start Monday however, 100 students arrived tardy.

“The students need to learn to restructure their morning so that they can get here before school starts,” Principal John Shaughnessy said.

“Some of them are doing things like stopping at Starbucks, or McDonalds before coming to school, and it’s giving them less time to get to the school,” Shaughnessy added.

Despite these problems, Shaughnessy said that he wouldn’t change anything about the new policy.

“I think that the Late Start Mondays are a great addition to our school year, a great addition for staff professional development, and I think that 90 minutes every other Monday is a perfect amount of time for the students to have,” Shaughnessy said.
