It was Homecoming all over again for World Series MVP David Freese, a 2001 Lafayette alum, when he returned to the school on Jan. 6.
“We’re very excited for David and all the Cardinals and what they accomplished this year and what it meant to the community — family, friends, fans, everything,” said Lynn Freese, David’s mother, who was also in attendance.
Freese came back to be honored at the school’s “David Freese Recognition Night” and to meet his fans during an hour long meet and greet where students were allowed to meet with Freese, take a professional picture with him and have him autograph one piece of memorabilia.
The night consisted of an interview with student publications students, the meet and greet, a pre-game speech for the boys basketball team prior to their Conference game against Mehlville where he served as an hoinorary coach.
Freese was also honored by the boys basketball team with warm-ups that displayed his varsity number at Lafayette along with his name.
The Lancers won 58-37, maintaining their undefeated Conference record.
“He inspired me to get my first points of the season of the season and gave life to the team,” senior Kenny Patty said, “We knew he was there watching us but we still had a task to win so we went out and did our thing.”
