The Lafayette Amnesty International group, started in 2006 by a group of students, aims to raise awareness about international social issues.
According to “What is Amnesty International at LHS?” the group organizes events such as concerts, guest speakers, educational campaigns, and write-a-thons to better educate the community about global injustices. The Lafayette chapter of Amnesty International had pledged to avoid especially controversial topics in order to encourage the most student involvement as possible. The group explained in their informational flier that these topics are avoided “to ensure that our true mission is not lost in controversy.”
The focus topics include: promoting fair trade products, educational opportunities to all people in all countries, human rights education, and encouraging companies to operate in ways that show respect for human rights and the environment.
Sponsor Paige Hereford said, “Everybody is welcomed, they can go anytime. It gives them a chance to learn about what’s going on in the world and have a voice.”
According to Hereford, upcoming meetings will focus on plans for next year. Amnesty International will meet Tuesday, April 12 at 3:15 p.m. in Room 180.
