On April 22, some students will fast through their lunches to participate in the One Meal, One Day event to support starving children around the world.
The event encourages students to skip lunch, then donate the money they would have spent to the cause. The money will go to Compassion International, which uses it to help hungry children around the world.
“The idea is to focus on being hungry for just one meal, just to remember what it is like so you can emotionally and mentally connect what it is like to be a hungry kid, with all these other thousands that are starving,” National Honor Society (NHS) sponsor AnnMarie Gilman said.
Volunteers will be standing outside of the lunch lines to collect donations from passing students and there will be a table set up on the stage to collect as well.
“[The event] just symbolizes the fact that we can go hungry for a day,” senior Mason Jones said.
To create awareness of world-wide hunger, there will be an informational video playing on April 22 and announcements will play throughout the week to educate students.
Even if students do not want to give up their lunch, their donations will still be accepted.
“If people do not want to do that, it is fine. We are just asking that they would then donate the balance of their change if they did go up and buy something,” Gilman said.
“If everyone could donate $5, we could easily make $10,000 with just Lafayette,” Jones said.
