Student Council (STUCO) hosted its annual Turkey Dance for local senior citizens on Nov. 21. This event provides senior citizens around LHS with a traditional Thanksgiving meal and hopping dance numbers.
Senior Class secretary, Ashley Nussbaum said, “We host this for all the members of the Lafayette community. The elderly pay taxes for us to go to school, so basically we’re just treating them and making them feel that we appreciate them.”
STUCO members worked together in order to provide the people attending with a memorable and relaxing afternoon.
“We’ve been cutting pies and other people have been serving the food and drinks, getting refills, that sort of thing. We’re even raffling off the extra pies for the winners to take home,” sophomore Haley Harrison said.
Harrison added, “My hands are really sticky from cutting pies for about an hour, but it’s worth it.”
For most high school students, spending time with older people isn’t the normal Sunday event.
Nussbaum said, “It’s really fun actually, [the Turkey Dance attendees] get up and dance and sometimes they’ll ask you to dance with them.”
Students and their guests danced together on the dance floor, each teaching the different generations various dances. The senior citizens taught students line dances while the students shared dances like The Electric Slide, The Cupid Shuffle and The Cha-Cha Slide to the elderly.
“My brother said one year they taught the senior citizens the Cupid Shuffle and that it was really cool,” sophomore Luke Bring said.
He concluded, “This year was no different.”
