Each year every staff member at Lafayette may choose to honor one student whom they believe has stood out in the classroom or another area with a Choice Award. The recognition may be due to academic success, grade improvement, a special achievement or personal character.
This year’s ceremony took place before school on April 7 in the Theater.
After the staff member presented the special medallion to the student of his or her choice, the two took a photo together backstage. Many teachers display these photos in their classrooms to show students achievements.
Students and staff members agree the Choice Awards are a special part of Lafayette because it gives teachers and staff members a chance to recognize worthy students.
Language Arts teacher Jeff Landow said, “There are a lot of kids who might not qualify for academic achievement awards but are really good kids and work hard. The Choice Awards are a good way of giving those students a chance to be recognized.”
Sophomore Jaelynn Hopgood said she is excited about receiving an award. Hopgood was nominated by social studies teacher Nick Tygesson.
“I was very proud of myself. I worked my butt of in that class. Many sleepless nights,” she said.
She continued, “I think it is important to acknowledge students achievements. I definitely won’t forget this award.”
Landow said the things he looks for in a candidate changes each year.
“Maybe they helped someone out, maybe its something about their character. It could also be if they shined academically. But there is something they did to make them stand out,” he said.
