Boys soccer look for winning record midway through season
Roughly half way through the regular season, it’s been up and down for the boys soccer team. They kicked off their season with a tournament, ending with a loss to Parkway West. The Lancers played Northwest at their home opener. Northwest came out on top with a final score of 0-2. There’s still a lot of soccer to play this season and the Lancers have a lot to prove.
After the loss to Northwest, the Lancers regained their confidence by winning two straight games against Fox and Kennedy. This was the perfect momentum the Lancers needed as their next game would be against Marquette (7-1), who is leading the Conference. The Lancers knew what they were going into. Marquette has one of the top strikers in the state, Keith Grieshaber (17 goals and 4 assists this season thus far). Defending Grieshaber would be key; keeping him from scoring would be the challenge.
Being major rivals, the boys are always pumped for this game and looking to come out on top. The Lancers controlled the first half keeping the score 0-1, but the Mustangs then found there energy and scored five second half goals. Marquette proved themselves worthy of being on top of the Suburban West Conference as they defeated the Lancers 6-0, three of those goals coming from Grieshaber. This was a low point for the boys, but they couldn’t let this loss keep them down.
The Lancers then went on to play Oakville (6-3) on their turf. It would be another tough challenge and the boys were ready. It was a close game, but once again the Lancers took the loss.
Next on the schedule was Parkway North, which would be a pretty even match for the boys. When a game like this comes around, you take advantage of it. The boys admitted to not playing well, but pulled through and won 1-0. After two tough games, it was time for a win for the Lancers to build confidence and momentum.
Another tournament was on the schedule for the boys and their first opponent would be Parkway Central at Parkway West who would surely be a win for the Lancers. Looking at their record of 4-6, another opportunity for a win was right in front of them.
Unfortunately, the boys couldn’t find the back of the net and ended up losing 0-1. The tournament wasn’t over and the boys had to keep their heads up and move forward.
The next match was against Parkway West, who the boys had already lost to in the last tournament they played in. It was a good effort given by the Lancers but the Longhorns took the win 1-2.
After already meeting once this season, the boys had an idea of the way Parkway West played and it was a chance to redeem themselves. After several games of not playing to what they could be, the Lancers got it together and played as a team. They found the back of the net once and shutout Parkway West giving the Longhorns just their second loss of the season.
The Lancers face off in a home match tonight (Sept. 26) against Cape Notre Dame. Notre Dame has an overall record of 1-3 which for the Lancers this is an opportunity to take advantage of. The game starts at 6 pm. The Lancers have an even record right now and to keep this season rolling, they need to step up offensively.
