With the wind on his side, senior CJ Campbell hit the ball sailing into right field, over the fence, at the Lafayette baseball field to bring himself and senior Michael Callahan home, opening the scoring in the bottom of the first inning.
Both Campbell and junior Mason Faasen hit a home run in the Friday night performance that saw Lafayette beat Ladue at home by mercy rule, 15-0, March 28. With this win, the Lancers have won both of their opening home games of the season by mercy rule.

While the wind assisted Campbell and other Lafayette batters, it posed a problem early on in the game for senior starting pitcher Landon Martin, as he walked two batters during the top of the first inning. Despite the free bases, Ladue failed to capitalize on the opportunity and failed to get any runs.
Martin bounced back from the slow start, throwing a shutout and pitching five strikeouts.
“I did well coming back after the first rough inning, coming back, having fun, loosing up, instead of forcing everything,” Martin said.
He only had to pitch three innings since Lafayette’s offense took control of the game in the bottom of the second inning, scoring eight runs.
The Lancer’s took advantage of free bases given by Ladue to build a big lead early on in the game.
“We took advantage of them giving us free 90s. It’s not always about sticking it around but taking advantage of what the team is giving you,” coach Cole Dupont said.
Earlier that week, Lafayette hosted their first home game of the season against Chaminade, once again winning by mercy rule, 17-7, March 26.
Pitching just three innings, senior starting pitcher Renn Fiss had six strikeouts and gave up just two hits.
The Lancer’s started the game strong, scoring nine unanswered runs in the first three innings. The Red Devils tried to comeback scoring a combined seven runs in the 4th and 5th innings, but were unable to contain Lafayette’s offense, highlighted by junior Landon Mathews’ five RBI performance.
The Lancers have taken advantage of the brand new field this season.
“We like playing at home, we practice enough here and play on the road enough to come out here and [play in front of] the families that come out here,” Dupont said.
With these two wins, the Lancer’s were on a three game winning streak, before it ended Saturday, March 29, as Lafayette travelled to play SLUH. The Billikens edged past the Lancer’s, in a 17 run thriller, winning 9-8.
