With senior guard Drew Austermann, junior guard Brady Micek and junior forward Drew Pickering out sick, the Lancers had some new faces show-up on the court for the Marquette rivalry game, Tuesday night.

“It makes me really proud that we had so many people give a great effort,” boys basketball head coach Don Kreienkamp said. “We picked up, we ran similar plays, we did things a lot similarly and it felt like a normal game and that’s a testament to our bench and the depth of our team.”

Lafayette’s (9-11) slow start in the first quarter gave Marquette (13-6) a lead that they held until the end of the game.

A glimpse of success from the Lancer offense cut the Mustangs lead down to two points in the second quarter.

However, this was the closest Lafayette came to taking the lead all-night with an ineffective third quarter that stretched the Mustangs lead to 17 points until the game ended, 42-61.

“Basketball is a game of runs and we gave it a good punch, [we] just needed a couple more shots to go in,” Kreienkamp said.

Lafayette will play Ritenour (7-13) in a Conference matchup at home, Thursday night.

“We will have our three starters back and we have to focus on our Conference games to get ready for Districts and play better as a team and as a defense,” senior guard Derek Jeffries said.

Struggling to find points all-game, Lafayette fell to Marquette in a 38-64 rivalry loss.

“We kept the fight up for the first half of the game and we just lost it at the end, mentally,” senior forward Taylor Nania said.

Despite keeping the Mustangs lead below 10 points in the first half, the Lancers couldn’t find a way to take the lead, Tuesday night.

After their loss against Marquette (8-10), Lafayette (9-10) will have a chance to redeem themselves against Ladue (6-12), Thursday night.

“We are definitely going to add a little more conditioning into our practices to make sure we are keeping the speed up with other teams,” Nania said. “We need to keep our hands up and be more solid on defense.”
