Escadrille, Winter Guard begin seasons with win

Boys Basketball
In their first game of the week on Jan. 23, the Lancers beat Hazelwood Central, 46-41, in the 1st round of the Circle 7 Ranch Tournament. This was a redemption for the Lancers who lost to Hazelwood Central, 56-37, last season on Jan. 28, 2022. However, in the semi-final round of the tournament on Jan. 26, the team lost to Kirkwood, 55-45.
Escadrille
For their first performance of the season, Escadrille participated in the Fort Zumwalt North Competition. The team placed 2nd in Pom and 4th in Jazz. For solo performances, junior Sydni Knox placed 1st in the Junior/Senior category, sophomore Lauren Mitchell placed 1st in the Freshman/Sophomore category, and sophomore Lydia Werk placed 2nd in the Freshman/Sophomore category.
“It was my first time doing a solo. I was more nervous dancing by myself than when I danced with a team,” Werk said. “I was surprised and thrilled that I got 2nd.”
Swimming and Diving:
At the Springfield Invitational on Jan. 27, the team placed 2nd overall for the Friday Night Meet. The next night, Jan. 28, the team won the meet as the 1st place overall champions. In diving, senior Maggie Arcenaux placed 1st and sophomore Lucia Tenny placed 5th. In the 200 Medley Relay, a team with seniors Maggie Arcenaux and Grace Tyson, junior Megan Bilsland and sophomore Nour Abdennadher placed 1st. Tyson and junior Ellie Kipper placed 1st in the 500 Free. Sophomore Morgan O’Connell placed 1st in the 100 Backstroke. Tyson and Kipper placed 1st in the 100 Fly.
“The whole swim and dive team who made the trip down to Springfield worked really hard in the days prior to the meet to prepare so we could compete the best we could. Although there were some rough parts of the meet for everyone our perseverance and determination helped us gain points for our team leading to our win,” Tenny said.
Boys Wrestling
At their match against Eureka on Jan. 26, which was pushed back due to a snow day on Jan. 25, the Lancers won 58-9. They finished 14th at the Kyle Thrasher Invitational on Jan. 28. Individually, junior Dylan Roth and sophomore Aidan Schoen placed 5th. Senior Blake Johnson placed 7th and sophomore Devon Reese placed 8th.
Girls Wrestling
At their first direct match against Eureka on Jan. 26, which was pushed back due to a snow day on Jan. 25, the Lancers won 48-29. They then went on to participate in the Kyle Thrasher Invitational on Jan. 28, where the team placed 6th overall. Senior Jayla Jones, junior Toby Goertz and sophomore Hannah Henderson placed 2nd individually. Senior Dashiya Houston placed 3rd and junior Maddie Johnson placed 4th.
Winter Guard
Winter Guard placed 1st in their class at the Liberty Wentzville competition on Jan. 28. This was their first competition of the season.
“Regardless of what comes next, placing first was an amazing motivator to continue to put effort into the show for the rest of the season,” sophomore Amanda Qualley said.
