Boys basketball breaks seven-game losing streak; Lancer wrestling places second at KC duals

Boys basketball: After a seven-game losing streak, the Lancers won their last three games to bring their record to 6-9. The first was a close 59-51 over Liberty Wentzville on the team’s Senior Night on Jan. 14. Seniors Drew Byous and Sam Murray led the Lancers in points, scoring 19 and 10 respectively. Byous went 4-4 on free-throws. Their next game was a 55-46 win against Lindbergh on Jan. 19. Byous once again led the team, scoring 18 points, and seniors Drew Behl and Aiden Rosen-McGinnis weren’t far behind with 13 and 12 points. The Lancer’s final win was an 81-45 blowout against Parkway South on Jan. 22. Once again, Behl led the team with 12 points, and senior Pernell Garner and junior Matt Jones followed close behind with 11 each. In the three-game win streak, offensive leader Behl put up a total of 49 points.

Boys wrestling: The Lancers traveled to Kansas City on Jan. 15 to take place in the Kansas City Duals. Overall, the team placed second in the tournament after posting their first loss of the season. They played against a team from Lawrence, Kansas and won 72-12, and they defeated Park Hill, 45-31. Unfortunately, the Lancers broke their perfect season in a 44-24 loss against the returning State Champions, Liberty High School, from Kansas City. The following weekend, the Lancers bounced back to win the Winnetonka Duals on Jan. 23. They took down Ozark, Seckman, Belton and Staley by respective scores of 50-23, 59-19, 68-6 and 50-23. In their final match-up, the Lancers beat Ozark again, 48-21, to claim the championship. With a 28-1 team record, the Lancers will advance to the postseason in the first week of February.

Girls basketball: On Jan. 14, the Lady Lancers dominated Seckman, 62-22. Senior Brynn Jeffries was a big contributor, scoring 31 points and going 10 of  19 on her field goals and 5 of 8 on free throws. The Lady Lancers had a 59-18 win over Lindbergh on Jan. 19. Senior Brynn Roach led the team with 18 points and went 6 of 11 on field goals. Jeffries followed close behind with 16 points on the night. However, in their game against Parkway South on Jan. 22, the Lady Lancers lost a close one, 69-62. They look to get their next win in their rematch against Pattonville, who they lost to during their five-game losing streak earlier this season.

Girls swimming and diving: Two weeks ago, the Lady Lancers scored big and won the Lafayette Quad against Nerinx Hall, Parkway South and Webster Groves. They continued their win streak with two wins over two previous opponents this week. On Jan. 12, they swam against Webster Groves again and dominated with a 143-43 win. Their following meet was on Jan. 14 against Parkway South, and while it was closer, the Lady Lancers won 95-75. Unfortunately, they fell to the Marquette Mustangs, 107-79. The Lady Lancers bounced back with a 97-89 win against the Parkway West Longhorns, who are long time rivals for the Lady Lancers. The team has one final meet against Eureka on Jan. 27 before they head to the Suburban Conference Yellow Pool Meet on Feb. 2-3.

Girls wrestling: The Lady Lancers traveled to Kansas City for the Kansas City Duals on Jan. 15. The team placed second in the tournament and was able to hold their own against some of the best teams in the State. They beat Smithville 48-24, Kearney 48-30 and Platte County 42-26. Despite the wins, the Lady Lancers lost against Wentzville Holt in the championship, 42-36. However, they came back and defeated Parkway South on Jan. 19, 42-27. Next week, the Lady Lancers will be preparing for a long postseason run starting with Districts on Feb. 5-6.

Hockey: In their last two games of the regular season, the Lancers went out with two big wins. The first was against Vianney on Jan. 15. With the 8-1 win, the Lancers avenged their 5-8 loss to the Griffins on Dec. 7. Senior Justin Sprague and sophomore Shane Robinson each had a hat trick in the game with three goals apiece; senior Samuel Rubenstein had two goals in the gam. Their next game was a nail-biter against the De Smet Spartans on Jan. 23, but the Lancers pulled through with a close 4-3 win. After ending their season with an 8-5-3 record, the Lancers are seeded third for the Challenge Cup playoffs. They’ll play against CBC (#2), Chaminade (#7) and Rockwood Summit (#10) in the upcoming Round Robin.
