Winter sports begin season; Lancer wrestling goes undefeated

Weekly sports update: Nov. 24-Dec. 6

Boys basketball: For their first game of the season, the Lancers lost a close one against St. Dominic. The final score of the game was 69-60, with senior Drew Byous leading the team with 18 points, the majority of them coming from his five three-point field goals. The Lancers suffered another defeat against De Smet on Dec. 2, losing the match 62-34. Despite the two losses, the Lancers gained their first win on Dec. 4 against St. Louis Christian Academy, winning 60-50 in a second-half comeback.

Boys wrestling: In their first match of the season, the Lancers beat Timberland 68-12 on Dec. 2. Junior Jack McDonald came back in his match with a big win by pin and senior Evan Boren had a big win by fall over from a returning State qualifier. The Lancers won big in the Francis Howell North Tournament with 210.5 points, more than the other seven teams who competed. Seniors Evan Boren, Gabriel Frankenberger and Joel Mylin, juniors Thomas Hagan and Lane Tenny and freshman Dylan Roth each won in their respective weight class. Boren and Hagan each won by pin and the rest either won by decision or forfeit.

Girls basketball: The Lady Lancers began their season with a win after their game against the Rockwood Summit Falcons on Nov. 24. Lafayette won the game 55-31, with seniors Brynn Jefferies and Brynn Roach leading the way for the team with 14 and 12 points respectively. On Nov. 30, the team beat Nerinx Hall in a close 52-49 game. In that, Jefferies scored 17 points, with ten of them being free-throws, junior Andrya Roach also helped lead the team to victory with ten points overall in the game. The team lost their first game against Fort Zumwalt West on Dec. 2, with the final score being 34-26. However, they rebounded from the loss with a big 67-57 win against Pattonville on Dec. 4. In the game, Andrya scored 20 points, and Jefferies scored 14 to help boost the team for their third win of the season.

Girls swimming and diving: Relying on new talent for the new season, the Lady Lancers began their season on Dec. 2. In the match, the team dominated over Liberty Wentzville, winning 141-42.

Girls wrestling: Returning from a second-place State finish, the Lady Lancers started their season with a 4-0 win streak. Their first match was against Timberland on Dec. 2, where the team won 48-12 with big pins from senior Faith Cole, junior Seraphina Blackmon and sophomores Josette Partney and Jayla Jones. Their next three wins all came on Dec. 4. They beat Francis Howell Central with a 48-30 win, went on to crush Francis Howell in a 45-6 win and then beat Washington High School with a 47-30 win.

Hockey: In their quest for the Challenge Cup, the Lancers started off the season with a 4-2 win against Kirkwood High School. Sophomore Andrew Knapp led the way for the Lancers, scoring two goals and gaining one assist, and senior Ryan Duggan and junior Luke Carrico had a goal each on the game as well. However, in their next game against the De Smet Spartans on Dec. 4, the Lancers lost 6-3. Once again, Knapp had two goals in the game, and junior Shane Robinson had one goal as well.
