Softball closes out fall season in a tough loss to Eureka

In a heart breaking loss to Eureka, the Lancer softball team struggled to find its offense during post-season competition. The girls were unable to get a rhythm, ending the season against the Wildcats with a score of 0-6. Eureka will compete in the State semi-finals against Webb City on Oct. 25.

On Oct 10, District play kicked off against Washington on Lafayette home turf. The girls were able to score 3, as junior Maddie Seifert pitched a shut out, only letting up two hits.

The next round, played at Rockwood Summit on Friday, proved to be much more of a challenge. The team had just faced off against the Wildcats in regular season only a week before and was able to clinch a 3-2 win. The game was scoreless in the first two innings until Eureka stepped up in the third, bringing three batters home. They continued to shut down the Lancers, letting up zero runs and advancing to the State tournament against Webster Groves.

During regular season, the squad strung together a nine-game winning streak, with stand out performances by juniors Marissa Gress and Penn State commit Maddie Seifert. Right-handed pitcher Seifert, with an ERA of 1.51 for the season, also led the team in RBIs with 25. Gress found her strength offensively with 39 hits overall.

The girls look to regroup and come back strong next season with returning varsity members hungry for better post-season success.
