The Lancers were down a run in the fourth inning on May 28 when Khalfani Mar’Na led off from first and Lindbergh pitcher Will Spitzfaden went into his stance. Suddenly Spitzfaden turned and threw towards first as Mar’Na dove back to the base and was caught off guard when first baseman Matt Feldt tripped over him in an attempt retrieve the pitcher’s overthrow.
Mar’Na seized the opportunity and crawled out from under the first baseman, rounded second at top speed, and reached third base before Feldt stood and retrieved the ball. He was then batted in and scored the game tying run.
Although the first four innings made the scoreboard a collection of goose eggs and the number of errors was uncommonly high for both teams, Mar’Na was able to tie the game and put Lafayette back into motion.
The Lancers went on to capture the win when Josh James batted in a runner in the bottom of the seventh. They were lukewarm in the batter’s box, but played well in the field.
Senior catcher Jeff Kammer had two impressive throws to first that became pivotal outs. Fellow senior JT Miller aided the Lancer victory when he caught an impressive pop-fly in the top of the seventh, ultimately leading to a Lancer victory made memorable by Mar’Na’s race to third.
