Interstellar is out of this world
December 3, 2014
Christopher Nolan has returned to the silver screen after the 2012 hit, The Dark Knight Rises, with a new thought-provoking blockbuster, Interstellar. Nolan takes an ambitious leap with this film, making the transition from the streets of Gotham City to wormholes, black holes and other dimensions.
With our time on Earth coming to an end, former NASA pilot Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and a team of researchers undertakes the most important mission in human history; traveling beyond this galaxy to discover whether mankind has a future among the stars. This film was the subject of a lot of hype on the internet during production. When movie goers heard of a thought-provoking sci-fi thriller directed by Christoper Nolan, people were expecting to be blown away. This high expectation caused several people to dislike the movie however, as the movie was not what some were anticipating.
Is the movie good? Interstellar is fantastic. McConaughey was excellent in the film, bringing his signature charm along with him across the universe while giving an emotionally powerful performance. In fact, everyone gives a solid performance, on and off camera. Incredible visual elements accompany Han Zimmer’s epic soundtrack and Nolan’s intriguing plot, making you forget the three hour duration of the film.
With that being said, Interstellar is not without flaws. I, like many other critics, have a great amount of respect for Christopher Nolan considering he is one of the few people in the industry today who has a passion for telling original stories and in doing so he keeps the art of film making alive. Nolan has set the bar so high for himself that critics expect to be blown away by every film he creates. According to many critics, Interstellar is a very good movie compared to most big budget Hollywood blockbusters, but for Nolan standards it is mediocre.
While I think there may be some plot holes in the ending, I think the negative reviews tend to dissect minor issues with the film while not focusing on the overall quality of what they are watching. This is a film that introduces audiences to advanced scientific concepts and requires viewers to think a little bit. Tackling a story about quantum physics, the theory of relativity and different dimensions is certainly a risk.
I hope Christopher Nolan keeps taking risks with his films. Interstellar is a groundbreaking, complex film disguised as a fun blockbuster.
