When Pitch Perfect is in the news, many people think it is another version of Glee or High School Musical; cheesy jokes, over exaggerated situations, and mediocre voice talent. However, Pitch Perfect successfully mixes music, humor and friendship together to create a fresh musical high school students will love.
Beca, played by Anna Kendrick, is a college freshman forced by her father to attend Bardan University instead of pursuing her dream of becoming a famous DJ. After a month at school, Beca is persuaded to try out for the Bardan Bellas, a female acapella group full of misfits. In hopes of placing first at the acapella finals, Beca attempts to convince the Bellas to try new songs as they go head to head with their all-male group rivals, the Treblemakers.
In Pitch Perfect, the plot does not follow the traditional musical standards. Not once in the movie does anybody break out into a random song where suddenly everyone knows the words and choreography. Instead, the songs in the movie are realistically rehearsed before performed. Having the plot of the movie this way, it is easier to connect with the characters and does not make the performances seem tacky.
Anna Kendrick is simply one word: perfect. No, she’s two words: Pitch Perfect. Not only does she flawlessly portray her character’s sassy attitude, but her voice is merely stunning. However, Kendrick isn’t the only shining star. Rebel Wilson as the hilarious Fat Amy, Anna Camp as the perfectionist Aubrey, Skylar Astin as the talented Jese, and Adam Devine as the over-confident Bumper all rise above and beyond as they took on their character.
I highly recommend taking some time to go see Pitch perfect. The non-stop jokes, brilliant covers of hit songs and the touching friendships will leave you wanting to have a remote in the theater to rewind and watch the movie over and over again.
