Where St. Louis Pizza and Wings once stood proud and erect now stands an equally promising pizza joint that goes by the name of Pizza Pizza and has two cool, supposedly Italian chefs with thick curling mustaches staring out at Manchester road with little smirks on their faces.
Either they know something you don’t, or they are happy to be where they are. I never thought to ask them but I did think to stop by and check out what they had to offer.
The restaurant is brightly decorated in neon colors and has a welcoming staff that mumbles on in some language I want to say is Italian, for reasons I’m sure you can guess, and a laid back American kid in a track jacket that seems to be the go-to guy at the register.
A large menu gives you prices, specials and combo deals that include pizza, wings, fries and onion rings. The pizzas come in small, medium, large and extra large sizes and can be custom made with a long list of toppings, dipping sauces, and even your choice of multi-grain and gluten free crusts.
Although the multi-grain crust can only be made with small or medium sized pizzas I didn’t think to ask about the gluten-free pizza; mainly because I have no clue what that even means. There is also a choice of thin and thick crusts.
So I walked in with a buddy and ordered two large pizzas, thick crust. We decided on Spicy BBQ Chicken and Double Cheeseburger. We were told that it would be about 20 minutes, so while we waited around and got to looking at the menu more we decided to order a small order of wings just for kicks.
The wings came out about 10 minutes before the pizza and we devoured them pretty fast. They didn’t have much of a sauce on them but it was more like a fried crust that had a bit of flavor.
We ordered hot wings, but they didn’t seem to hot, but they were meaty nonetheless.
Shortly after we licked the bones clean, two piping hot pizzas arrived in white pizza boxes and we started to dig in.
The Spicy BBQ Chicken pizza had diced chicken, drizzled BBQ sauce, and banana peppers. It was a good balance of sweet and spicy and it was nice to have tomato sauce as the base as opposed to a BBQ sauce as some places make their pizzas with.
The Double Cheeseburger pizza was actually my favorite. It had the perfect combinations of four cheeses, hamburger, bacon bits and ham bits.
When pulling apart pieces foot long stretches of cheese begged to be left in their places and needed to be pulled apart by force to release a triangular slice from their grasp.
Both pizzas were delicious and had the perfect crust that tasted great by itself, when in some cases the cheese completely slid off of it. It had a hint of garlic and butter, but wasn’t too greasy or salty where you had to drink too much water and not eat enough pizza.
Pizza Pizza also offers free delivery and when asked how far out they would make trips to the guy at the counter said it doesn’t really matter, especially if you decide to order a few pizzas.
Overall the death of St. Louis Pizza and Wings was not in vain as Pizza Pizza offers quality pizza at reasonable prices that offer customizable meals, free delivery and daily specials that make it a great addition to the Ellisville area.
