Starting this year, progress reports will no longer be sent to parents and guardians.
“We would’ve posted grades in the past and [guardians and students] would’ve gotten a notification that the grades were posted,” Shelley Willott, Assistant Superintendent of Learning and Support Services, said.
Instead, the schools will be utilizing messages on ParentSquare.
“We are simply going to send out a message through Parent Square telling parents, ‘We’re halfway through the quarter, check the portal. We’re halfway through [the] semester, check the portal,’” Willott said.
Infinite Campus’ portal gives access to students’ grades and other important information, easily online.
“Technology is meant to make things easier and more efficient,” Willott said. “We had that technology… in place in that always-open portal, but we weren’t necessarily using that to our advantage. We were still going that extra step and posting [progress reports] when we didn’t need to.”
This decision came from the Central Office Administration. Willott supports this change as she believes it will be easier for parents to see and communicate about grades.
“Students and parents aren’t going to see a difference, necessarily. What teachers will see is that they’re not formally posting so frequently,” Willott said. “They’re just keeping their grades updated in the gradebook so that kids can see where they are.”
Willott also said the decision will allow teachers to focus on teaching.
“Any minute that we can give a teacher back is likely going to benefit a student in some way. [Teachers] are able to do more things to benefit students, rather than managerial tasks that are really already being taken care of,” Willott said.
From the perspectives of students, senior Ella Fusco believes that the change has benefits.
“[Infinite Campus] is honestly more up-to-date. Progress reports only come out every quarter or every semester, whereas grades are constantly upgrading [in Infinite Campus],” Fusco said.
