Class of 2025 brings back Fun Run fundraiser

To kick-off Homecoming, spectators watch the Fun Run. The last one happened in 2014, and it was stopped because not many people attended. “We could get a lot of participaction this time,” Amanda Lewis, assistant principal said.

On April 30, the Sophomore Fun Run returns for the first time since 2014.

The run began in 2000 as the kick-off event for Homecoming and was originally sponsored by Student Council. It was modified to the Glow Obstacle Run in 2015, and then finally replaced by the Olympic Games in 2016. There hasn’t been a Homecoming kick-off event since 2018 though.

“It stopped happening because no one was attending,” David Choate, STUCO sponsor said.

They also experimented with a movie night but no one attended that either.

The Sophomore Fun Run is a 5k race that will be a fundraiser for the Class of 2025 Senior Celebration. The class hopes to raise a few thousand dollars from the event.

Money will be raised through registrations. Race participants will have to pay $30. Participants will get a free T-shirt, but there is a limited amount of shirts, so anyone who registers later may not receive one. Registration can be accessed through ParentSquare.

“There’s a link through ParentSquare and you can just click on the link and it will take you through the questions about T-shirt size and credit card information,” Assistant Principal Mandy Lewis said.

The run will take place Sunday, April 30 at 8:30 a.m.

“We’re doing [this] as kind of the kickoff for Senior Week and then the seniors are going to have something every single day as an event or a giveaway. We were hoping to be able to do it this past fall and tie it into Homecoming, but we weren’t able to logistically get it figured out,” Lewis said.

The run will start at Lafayette and go to Wildwood Park before looping back. Not many major roads will be crossed on the track and there will be police at the crossings for safety. There will be no prizes for the top finishers, but parents may provide medals.

Originally, it was planned that after the race, there would be food trucks and games, however, that plan was dropped.

“Unfortunately we don’t have as many volunteers as we had hoped to have,” Lewis said.

But Lewis still thinks many people will attend the race.

“We have reached out to some of the sports teams, so we’re hoping that a lot of teammates will also come. It’s just like a fun day to run and compete with each other,” Lewis said.
