It’s that time of year again. The time of year when people feel very generous. During the day known as “Giving Tuesday” in 2018, Americans donated $380 million to charities across the country.

In that same spirit, the Lafayette Class of 2022’s Sophomore Advisory has started a Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital Toy Drive. The drive runs through January 13.

They ask for new, unwrapped toys. There are donation boxes that have gift wrap on them in every single classroom. There is also an online donation page for monetary donations. If you do decide to donate online, the donations are tax-exempt and Cardinal Glennon can give you an e-mail receipt.

Along with sophomores, Natalia Parr and Bradley Simmons are Co-Communications Directors for Sophomore Advisory.

“The Community Coordinator [of Cardinal Glennon] sent Mrs. Fields a generic note in the summer asking for any interest in community work together. [Later], I sent him a note and the toy drive kind of came from that,” Simmons said.

The Comunity Outreach Coordinator for Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital is Ryan Jennings. Due to the policy of SSM Health, Jennings could not give an interview for this story.

A Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital flyer says that the toys donated help the children in the hospital to have a ‘normal’ life.

Sophmore Pooja Reddy is the vice-president of Sophmore Advisory.

“We felt that this [toy drive] would be a fun way of getting the school more active in the community. It’s also around the holidays, so we felt this was the right time [to start the toy drive.] We always wanted to do some sort of service project,” Reddy said. “We really want to help people who don’t have as much as we have.”

There is an incentive offered for donating toys.

“As a reward, the teacher with the most donations will receive Chick-Fil-A sandwiches for every person in their first-hour class,” Simmons said.
