Time to Rhyme: Poetry Out Loud showcases students’ literary chops in unique way
The Poetry Out Loud competition has been rescheduled for Thursday, Jan. 16. The contest requires students to recite famous poetry that they have memorized. Participants are judged on their accuracy, as well as presentation and understanding. Jeffrey Landow, language arts teacher, sponsors the event.
“This is my 6th year doing it. Right now, there are 5 or 6 students signed up. We usually lose a few participants, because they don’t end up memorizing the poems,” Landow said.
Junior Conor Kelleher is performing in the competition.
“I decided to get involved in the contest because I knew that winning it would look good on college applications, and I’ve always enjoyed language arts,” Kelleher said.
In preparation for the competition, Kelleher has memorized two poems.
“I just chose two poems that fit the requirements. One of them had to be under 25 lines. I’ve been practicing reading them aloud, and my mom has been helping me out,” he said.
Those interested in watching Kelleher and his competitors try their hands at rhymes and recitations in “Poetry Out Loud” should report to the Library directly after school on Thursday.
