The canned food drive kicked off Oct. 29 and will last until Nov. 18. Lafayette has set their goal at 50,000 cans for the annual tradition.
Students will bring their cans to their language arts classes; the winning class will receive a pizza party.
Jean Peter’s 3rd Hour Senior Literature Flex class has several secret approaches to the drive that Peters will not disclose.
Peter’s said, “I have supreme confidence in my Senior Lit class.”
Peters continued about her feelings toward the canned food drive, “It is a tradition that I take a lot of pride in…most of us are really spoiled brats when it comes to food.”
She continued to explain that most of us do not need to worry where our next meal comes from, but it is important to give to those who are not as fortunate.
David Choate, sponsor of Student Council (STUCO), said the can total collected by the student organization will go towards the Sophomore Language Art class totals.
Students have unique ways of collecting cans for the cause. Senior Maria Tocco collected cans at the door of her annual Halloween party.
“Since I have an annual party every year with about 200 people, I decided to put it to use,” Tocco said.
Tocco collected 150 cans, which she donated to Peter’s 3rd Hour Literature Flex class.
“Not only could we win the pizza party, but we are able to donate to a great cause, Circle of Concern,” Tocco said.
Each teacher is keeping the running total for their individual classes. However, since the canned food drive is a competition, many teachers want to keep their totals confidential.
