Though the launch of lhsimage.com will forever go down in history, it’s only right to look back at what made this week and month great in history.
February is National African American History Month, a month dedicated to celebrating African American contributions, was born in February. The Library of Congress says the month’s purpose is to bring awareness to “their struggles for freedom and equality.”
Feb. 2 is Groundhog Day. If Punxsutawney Phil fails to see his shadow, winter will end soon. But if Phil sees his shadow, winter will continue for six more weeks.
Feb. 3 is known as the anniversary of “The Day the Music Died.” In 1959, three music legends, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J. P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson and their pilot Roger Peterson were killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa.
On Feb. 8, Boy Scouts across America will celebrate The 100th Anniversary of The Boy Scouts of America (BSA). One of Lafayette’s own, Mathematics Department Chair Danna Philips, is preparing to celebrate as well.
Philips received the “Silver Beaver Award,” from the BSA which she described as the highest award a council can award a volunteer. She received the award for the immense amount of work and time she gave to the BSA and the service that she provided to others.
“It’s a milestone for anything to last for 100 years, and I think that it really says a lot about the program,” Philips said. “I’d like to see it go on for another hundred years, too.”
Philips plans to celebrate the BSA Centennial by serving on the National Staff at the BSA National Jamboree, as she has for the past three years.
