As of March 9, the first same-sex marriages were performed in Washington D.C. In December of 2009, the 13-member D.C. Council agreed upon passing the Marriage Equality Act. This week over 300 couples have applied for marriage in the D.C. area.
Joining Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, Washington D.C. is the sixth area in the country where same-sex marriages can occur.
