ALARP is normally thought of as writing, reading and research.
But, Megan Salmi’s 7th Hour ALARP class includes much more. The class has only nine students.
“It’s a really tight-knit group because it’s such a small class,” Salmi said.
Another interesting thing about this class is the new tradition they’ve created.
“ They make every Tuesday like fat Tuesday,” Salmi said. “They don’t do it all the time, but just whenever someone thinks to bring in food,” she continued. “I think on actual Fat Tuesday people had like homemade cookies, bags of candy, I mean there was more food than I’ve ever seen in my life.”
Some teachers don’t allow their students freedoms like these but Salmi doesn’t let the tradition become a distraction. “I don’t let them obsess with the food. Because there’s only nine of them I can do it; with a group of 30 I would never let that happen.”
Salmi added, “ They’re a really good group of kids. I think it’s good for their relationships with each other. It shows that they get along. They always compliment each other on what they can make. It’s totally driven by them.”
