Mystery Solved: Why are there chains blocking off rows in the parking lot?
April 12, 2016
In the beginning of the year, students that are generally upperclassmen pick their parking passes for the year. It’s a big rush to get a spot that isn’t on the outskirts; it’s better to be closest in the line of cars.
Some people have different preferences on which lot to choose their spot in. Usually students base their choice off of traffic flow or where the buses come out of.
This year, Lafayette blocked off several of the rows closest to the Welcome Center. Because of this, some students are forced to turn in past their designated row.
Officer Bernie Widdis cleared up the confusion by explaining the reason for the chains covering the rows.
“It’s to keep traffic control going. There are so many kids coming in at the same time that if everybody tried to stop and go up that aisle, it would end of backing up the traffic onto Clayton road,” Widdis said.
Widdis went on to say that it is more of a safety concern, and it’s more important to stay safe rather than have an easily accessible parking spot.
Barbara Mullen, parking attendant, shed more light onto the situation.
“We just want to keep traffic flowing at a smooth rate. If everyone got the chance to turn whenever they wanted to, the parking lot would be more prone to accidents. This is just more efficient,” Mullen said.
No matter where a student or staff member turns into at the beginning of the school day, these chains are going to stay put.
