Through These Halls: Reynolds excels on gridiron despite young age

Although sophomore Jake Reynolds has played soccer and basketball since his younger years, football has always been his passion.

“I’ve been playing since kindergarten for the Chesterfield Bears,” Reynolds said.

His beginning years consisted of laid-back flag football, as opposed to aggressive tackle, but when he transferred over to the Junior Lancers in 6th Grade his potential became apparent.

Reynolds decided to give kicking a shot that year, and has stuck with it ever since.

Reynolds was the only freshman varsity football player last season, as he was given the opportunity to dress out for varsity games on Fridays.

“They needed a back-up kicker in case someone was to get hurt and I just fit the job,” Reynolds said.

Though he didn’t start, Reynolds still had the chance to play a few times.

This year, however, the sophomore has the Lancers’ starting job all to himself and has been integral to their 7-2 record.

Long-term, Reynolds is shooting for a scholarship.

“I’m really working for it,” Reynolds said.

Thus far, he has received letters from various universities about football camps, but colleges don’t typically express interest until a player’s junior year.

As if his humble beginnings weren’t admirable enough, Reynolds is ranked as the #4 kicker in the nation by Pro Kicker for the Class of 2016.

“I give all the credit to my coaches and teammates for putting me in that position and having faith in me,” Reynolds said.
