Club Spotlight: Racquetball Club searches for a sponsor

It’s hard to find a sport at Lafayette that doesn’t already have a team, coach and schedules to play other schools. However, Racquetball Club is just now becoming gradually popular among the student body.

Racquetball, an indoor sport, consists of two or four players hitting a small, hard ball against a wall with a stringed racquet. The rooms typically are shaped like a cube, a tall wall on every side.

Drew Cusumano, sophomore, one of the founders of Racquetball Club, has been playing for three years now and started the club for the love of the sport.

“We’re just trying to make the sport of racquetball known again and play with others that enjoy it,” Cusmano said.

The team has been extremely dedicated in the sport, preparing for every match. Given the unique court, the club is unable to practice at Lafayette.

“We meet every week. We’ll practice twice then have a match. Usually, the other schools we play are private schools,” Cusmano said.

The only problem is, the club is currently without a teacher sponsor. Steve Berry, athletic director, is working to find a staff member willing to take this role.

“This group has been working hard for over two years now and have established a positive reputation and provide quality opportunities for students.  While it is considered a ‘club’ or ‘outside group,’ I want to support them as much as possible. They are looking for a faculty member who might be willing to serve as a sponsor and increase the connection and communication within the building,” Berry said.

Students in this club don’t have to have racquetball experience; anyone is welcome to join. If a teacher is interested in sponsoring this club, contact Manny Rodriguez at mailto:[email protected]
