Club Spotlight: Player’s Guild continues its Domination after school

Player’s Guild, a weekly after-school club at Lafayette, hopes to gain new members and continue competing in the games that they love.

Player’s Guild was founded in 1996 by Nathan Willard, language arts teacher (1996 also happened to be the year Willard started working at the school.)  Despite the club being brand new, it was still attended by many students every Thursday.

Popular games played by the students at the time included Warhammer 40,000, Magic: the Gathering (which is still quite popular to this day), and Risk. Risk was so popular for the first 10 years, in fact, that a tournament was held annually, with the champion winning the coveted “Diploma of Domination.”

These days, students in Player’s Guild enjoy Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Dungeons & Dragons.

Freshman Tim Palazzola, despite only being a part of the club for 6 weeks, has so far enjoyed his time in Player’s Guild.

“It’s not really a huge commitment. You just show up, unwind, and play card games,” he said.

Willard is heartened by the fact students have an opportunity like this in school.

“It’s the kind of club I wish my high school had,” Willard said.

Junior Eric Seals claims he has the best possible summary of what Player’s Guild is to him.

“Player’s Guild is a place where anybody of any age can relax and play games with other people every Thursday,” Seals said.
