Big venues like the Scott Trade Center, Verizon Wireless Amphitheater and The Pageant are nice and all but it really takes a small, intimate venue to experience the energy of a show. Last week I went to see Mac Miller perform at the Old Rock House at 1200 South 7th Street.
It was tucked away in a back alley-like area that was kind of shady but the venue stood out with its cream colored bricks and nice open patio and large windows. When you first walk in there is a large bar on the right, which you obviously can’t go to bearing a red X on each hand if you’re under 21.
From the bar area there is a small flight of steps that lead to small tables with barstools and posters from previous concerts and then there is another set of stairs that leads to an open floor that looks up to the stage. High above the stage there is a giant projector screen that shows all the happenings on stage for those who can’t see over the heads of the taller concert-goers in front of them.
The stage is close enough to the crowd that whoever is playing can actually see each individual fan and it is really cool when they call certain people out.
The best part about this small venue was that when the crowd got to waving their hands side to side of jumping up and down it was literally everyone doing it in unison and I found myself getting lost in the vibe of the show.
