Many of us take for granted the luxury of having a place to call our own, along with somewhere to keep our belongings. This summer, senior Addie Holdmeyer learned of a group of children who are not as fortunate and decided to lend a hand.
“When kids are taken from their homes. They don’t have a place to keep their things, so they are given a trash bag to put all of their things in,” Holdmeyer explained.
However, she didn’t just stumble upon this project by chance. The idea to help foster children stemmed from her mother’s interest in adoption.
“My mom has been looking into adoption for a couple of years, so we thought it would be fun and a good thing to do for the kids,” she said.
It was for this reason Holdmeyer decided to take action. She and her mother furnished boxes for foster children, lining them with decorative adhesive paper and adding a stuffed animal, a notepad and pens, but still leaving enough room for the children to keep their own belongings.
The two created about 35 boxes and donated them to a local adoption agency.
Although it was her summer service project, it seems Holdmeyer has no intention of discontinuing her acts of outreach.
“There are always new kids coming into the system, so there will always be a need for things like this.”
