Finding a dress to wear to a dance or formal event is a hassle for many girls, however, junior Kimberly Butler avoids this sometimes troublesome experience by making her own dresses.
Butler has made two dresses so far and has worn them to school dances, each time receiving positive feedback on her designs.
In addition to making dresses, Butler makes jewelry and is trying to start a business off of her talent.
Why did you decide to design your own dresses instead of buying a dress?
“When I started Fashion I last year it was really fun and I thought it was a lot to just make it and it is a lot cheaper.”
Do you think your dresses look nicer than something you could buy in a store?
“Yes, I think it allows you to have your own personal style and if you don’t like how something is you can just change it.”
Are there other motivations for making your own dress?
“Yes, as a matter of fact, there is this prom contest at Joann Fabrics and they give a $50,000 scholorship to the winner of the prom contest.”
Do you also wear the jewelry you make?
“Sometimes, mostly I give it to people as gifts and it is been a big hit so far, so I can try to make some money off that.”
What suggestions do you have for someone else who wants to make their own clothes?
“Definitely take your time, give yourself time to work on a project. There are mannequin dolls you can buy and you can adjust it to your own body and that really helps make [your dress] exactly how you want it.”
