With talent pouring from his finger tips, junior Thomas Heney is taking the thought of a professional music career to the next level. Gaining popularity through his social networking channels, Heney has 14 videos posted on Youtube of both original and cover songs, with a top hit of 625 views. This is what Heney has to say about his musical career:
- How did you first get interested in music?
“I started playing guitar when I was 11 or 12 because I liked the concept of making cool noises through a cherry red electric guitar,” Heney said.
“I matured and realized the idea of putting expressions into a melodic form was what really intrigued me about it and I began to listen to more soulful, melodic and more thought-out music both on a lyrical level and compositional level which has inspired me to keep doing all I can,” he added. - When did you take your music to the next level?
“Around the middle of my freshman year I had become familiar with the type of music I was most connected to, which had primarily been based on the John Mayer album, Continuum. After I had realized what kind of music suited me best, I started learning songs and incorporating original ideas into what I learned,” Heney said. “After playing these renditions for family members and friends, the desire of recording these songs really hit me at a high level so I began to go at it and see what would come of it,” He added. - Besides John Mayer, who/what else inspires you?
“Paolo Nutini and Jack Johnson drove me in a more acoustic direction and Feist was a band that introduced to me to a more independent style of music along with Nick Drake, The Shins, Bicycle Bombay Cluband and Matt Costa,” Heney said. - How would you describe your music?
“My music is a mixture of mainly acoustic instruments and clear vocals. It reflects uniqueness and originality even through cover songs that I’ve recorded. The songs im working on writing at the moment reflect clarity and simplicity across the board which I believe will lead to success and a great deal of listeners,” Heney said. - What do you hope to accomplish with your music in the future?
“Within the next couple of months I plan on writing some songs, recording them and releasing them on burned disks mainly selling out of my backpack and the trunk of my car,” Heney said. “Speaking in terms of the long run, I hope to get a record deal, and line up some more live shows to expand my number of listeners.” he added.
