New school year brings upgrades to front-door security

Visitors must now sign in by filling out a form on a computer. They must also provide much more information than before.

Entering the Lafayette school building may not be as easy anymore.

Beginning this school year, front door security has become more involved. Instead of signing in on a piece of paper, visitors are now required to sign in via computer.

Visitors fill out a form asking their name, where they are going in the building, purpose of their visit and auto information if they have a car in the parking lot.

“From this information we are able to print a name tag personalized for the visitor,” hall monitor Doug Rodgers said. “We tried it out a little bit during the last couple of weeks last year, just to see if it could work.”

The system was officially implemented throughout Rockwood in time for the 2017-2018 school year, and has been successful thus far.

The new visitors’ badges require that visitors explain where they are headed in the school and why they are in the school.

“The new system was mostly brought on by a general desire for uniformity among the Rockwood District, and it’s good to know more about the people in the building,” said Rodgers.

The new system provides much better information on visitors and does not leave handwriting up for interpretation.  Also, the information on visitors is stored on the computer, making it easier to refer back to later on.

However the new system isn’t without its flaws.

“The new form can take a while for visitors to fill out, and some people have difficulty maneuvering through the form.  But for the most part, it has been beneficial,” Rodgers said.
