Lancer football looks to defeat Eureka at Battle of 109
Coming off an appearance in the quarter finals last season, the Lafayette Lancers varsity boys football team is looking to contend in a similar fashion this season. In last year’s campaign, the Lancers finished with a 9-0 regular season record and proceeded deep into the postseason.
However, many of their departing seniors including Jon Voit, Shaquille Holley, and Elliot Montgomery will not be able to contribute. When asked how the graduated varsity seniors would affect the team, Coach Rick Voss claimed that the juniors have been lifting all summer and will be prepared for the Friday night battle. A few of these juniors include Caleb Lewis, Cameron Scales, and Grant Zellers. The juniors this season that are upgrading to the varsity squad will need to add significant support if the team wants to be a competitor when the playoffs come around.
Parking for the game will be free, but there are a limited number of spots available. Mr. Berry said, “We expect at least 4,500 people to show up. That’s not including any of the staff, so attendance may be up to 5,500.”
During last season’s Battle of 109, around 5000 people total showed up for the match where the Lancers defeated the Wildcats.
Shuttles will be available at Blevins Elementary and the Rockwood Administrative Annex. The two buses will begin delivering students at 5:30 and will stop when the last student has been brought back to Lafayette. Students are planning to dress in all white for the game. The contest will begin at 7 pm next Friday, Aug. 30. You can get your tickets at lunch this week for a small fee of $5.
Your donation will allow our student journalists to continue their work. You may become a PATRON by making a donation at one of these levels: White/$30, Black/$50, Gold/$100. Patron names will be published on the website and once per quarter on our social media accounts.
