AFJROTC participates in Florida marching contest
From Dec. 4 to Dec. 9 a group of more than 30 students traveled to Florida for an Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) Trojan Force Southwest regional drill meet.
“Our drill team and a few extras head down to Florida for the competition, but we try to make it a fun trip for us too,” said Colton Morgan, sophomore and member of AFJROTC. “We went down to Daytona beach first for a couple of days and then we went down to the competition.”
The teams competed in a drill contest, which consists of students marching in patterns and obeying orders.
“There is both a regulation and an exhibition drill team. The regulation team is a bit more basic and every team from the different schools do the same routine. The exhibition team gets to make up their own moves and marches and it can be a lot more complicated,” said Kylie Blechle, senior and member of the AFJROTC drill team.
Though the teams did not place in either category of this year’s competition, they are looking forward to what they will do in the future.
“Though we didn’t place, we aren’t letting that discourage us. We were happy that we just got to go and have a fun time at the beach and drilling,” said Blechle.
With the Florida competiton come and past, the team is now preparing for their next competition in Joplin, MO.
“We have to practice for Joplin, since we only have two more contests left in the year, but we’re looking forward to seeing what will happen,” Morgan said.
