Wednesday, April 28 was the monthly Student of the Month lunch with Principal John Shaughnessy.
The four students of the month, Chelsey Tripp, Deborah Montgomery, Demetrius Dolsey and Jessica Cohen were each allowed to bring a friend to share in the celebration. Each student was also given a certificate and a $15 gift card to Plato’s Closet.
Papa Johns Pizza, M&Ms and ice cold Coca Cola were served.
Each month, Shaughnessy said he asks the students the same two questions. First, “What do we do really well here at Lafayette?” Montgomery said, “The teachers as a whole are on you all the time, but they just want to see you do well.” Cohen said, “There are a lot of teachers that like what they do.”
The next question, “What do we do that’s not so great here that we can improve and make better?” was a little more difficult for the students to answer. Only Cohen had a gripe and complained about getting an appointment to see the guidance counselors. She said, “Sometimes I think getting Obama on the phone would be easier.”
Guidance Counselor Deborah Parker and math teacher Kathy Soucy run the Renaissance Student of the Month program and there is a committee that reads all the teacher written nominations and makes the selections. Normally there are five to six students per grade level nominated each month for the honor.
Though the lunch with the principal only started two years ago, Shaughnessy said he hopes it is a tradition that will continue.
