UPDATE: Senior starting quarterback Dominic Bisesi will now miss the entire season with a broken left arm. He will be replaced by junior Matt Goro.
The Lancers improved to 2-0 with a 24-21 overtime win over Lindbergh, but it proved to be costly. With the team looking to break a 21-21 tie late in the fourth quarter, senior quarterback Dominic Bisesi was knocked out of the game with a fractured left wrist while attempting a pass to senior Will Dupont.
Although a pass interference call put the Lancers in Lindbergh’s red zone on the play, they would have to wait until overtime to pull out the victory. A 27-yard field goal by junior Daniel Menees put them ahead but gave Lindbergh a chance to win it with a touchdown.
But the Lancers forced a three-and-out forced Lindbergh to miss the tying 42-yard field goal, giving Lafayette revenge for last season’s 42-10 loss to the Flyers.
A 10-yard touchdown pass from Bisesi to Dupont gave the Lancers a 7-0 lead in the second quarter before Lindbergh tied it with a 16-yard strike just before halftime.
The second half become a defensive showdown as both teams forced two interceptions and returned one for a touchdown.
On the half’s second play, Lafayette’s Kevin Hampton picked off a floating pass and took it 39 yards to take a 14-7 lead. Just a few minutes later, Lindbergh’s Chris Kew tied the score with a 50-yard return of his own.
The two teams continued to trade blows in the fourth quarter. With 9:08 left, the Flyers went ahead 21-14 on a 30-yard touchdown pass. The Lancers came right back with an 82-yard drive kept alive by senior Brock Behrndt’s 13-yard catch on third down and finished by a 2-yard touchdown run by junior Deonte Robinson.
They appeared to be in good position when senior Nick Messer intercepted a pass near midfield, but were unable to get any points after Bisesi’s injury. In overtime the team relied on junior quarterback Matt Goro, who hit senior Tyler Manne to set up the winning field goal.
“I did everything I could to get a win for Dom and my team,” Goro said, “I really utilized my teammates and put my trust in them and knew that my coaches would help me out.”
With Bisesi expected to miss four to six weeks, Goro will make his first career start on Sept. 9 at home againstMehlville(1-1), with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
