The first half of Friday’s District final against Washington was relatively tight, with few chances for both teams. But the Lafayette would flip the game script in the third quarter, scoring 20 unanswered points to take a 27-0 lead in the District final.
A high-scoring offensive performance backed by a strong defensive showing in the second half, crowned Lafayette District champions over Washington, 42-7, ending a 12-year drought.
“We just had to clean some things up [in the second half] and make sure our athletes were touching the ball. [senior quarterback Jack] Behl did a good job distributing [the ball]. I can’t say enough about our defense. Our defense was lights out tonight, they played great. [Winning Districts] is about them, they are having a great time. But, yet, they know there is more work to be done,” coach Boyd Manne said.
The Lancers (11-1) move to the State quarterfinals and will face Cardinal Ritter (9-1) at Cardinal Ritter College Preparatory. The furthest Lafayette has ever gone in the postseason is the State semifinals.
Leading 7-0 early in third quarter, junior Tim Washington returned a punt for 34-yards to Lafayette’s 49. Eight plays later, senior quarterback Jack Behl, who had 258 total yards and 4 touchdowns, threw his second touchdown pass of the day to junior receiver Brady Micek, making the score 14-0.

Washington tried to put points on the board after scoring a 29-yard touchdown, and recovering an onside kick late in the 4th.
The Lafayette defense had a strong showing, as they held Washington’s run-heavy offense to 308 total yards and one scoring drive. The Blue Jays only attempted 15 passes all game, with a 33% completion rate.
“We had a good game plan going. We managed to break them, break their spirt, and I think that’s was led us getting score up there,” senior middle linebacker Alex Behl said following the team’s strong defensive performance.
