Field Hockey:
The Lady Lancers beat Kirkwood 3-2 in the Round of 16 State Tournament Game Oct. 21, advancing them to the State Quarterfinals. Senior Olivia Williams set the single-season goal-scoring record for Lafayette. She leads the St. Louis area in goals with 40 and she leads in points with 100. With that, Lafayette has had a seven-game winning streak since their loss against Ursuline 2-1 on Sept. 21. Field hockey will now be playing in the State Quarter-finals at Villa Duchesne Oct. 24 at 3:45 p.m. Williams wants to keep their winning streak alive. “We hype everyone up before the game and just get everyone excited and ready. Because if we win, we’ll have more time together [and] it’s a lot of our last seasons. So we put in our best and just get everyone excited before the games,” she said. Besides being happy with her team, Williams is proud of her new record. “I feel like all my hard work has been paid off now. I currently have around 40 goals and I hope to be able to score a few more before the season ends; It just depends on how we do in the upcoming games.”
Girls Golf:
Junior Addy Surber won 9th place at the MSHSAA State Tournament on Oct. 17. Despite getting All-State status, Surber wasn’t satisfied. “I wasn’t the happiest after my round but it was super fun to go to and I was the only one that went [from the team] so I got a lot of one one-on-one time with my coach,” Surber said. “I wasn’t happy with how I played because the course was fairly easy for my game.” Despite being disappointed, Surber is ready for next year. “I hope to maybe relax a little bit and just have more fun since it’ll be my senior year [I’ll be able to] just enjoy the game more and stress less. I would love to get top five and top three would be awesome [this year]” she said.
Boys Soccer
The Lancers went 1-1 this week. They beat Marquette 1-0 courtesy of a goal from senior Daxton Shawke. Goalkeeper and junior Beck Henderson got his first varsity clean sheet in this win. But they would go on to lose to their other Rockwood rivalry game this week against Summit. Losing 2-1, the Lancers’ record stands at 12-8. Next week the Lancers will face Fort Zumwalt West, Oct. 25, during an away game.
Boys Swimming & Diving
The Lancers beat Lindbergh 118-61, Oct. 17. Then they placed second in the Springfield Invitational last week. In the 100-meter breaststroke, senior Caleb Warner broke a meet record and placed 1st. In the 200-meter freestyle relay, the Lancers won with a team of Warner, seniors Sam Bolla, James Thompson and Gregory Shao. Then, setting a new school record, Bolla, Shao, Warner and junior Ryan Huang won the 200-meter medley relay. The Lancers will compete at Conferences Oct. 23-24.
Girls Tennis
To finish off their season, the Lady Lancers got third place in the Class 3 State Championships, which is their highest finish since placing second in State in 2017. They swept Lee’s Summit North to claim third place. Senior and tennis State Champion Amber Yin is happy with their season. “I’m really proud of the team for what we accomplished this season. Placing 3rd in a difficult class is something I didn’t know at the beginning of the season if we would be able to do. Even though we lost in the semifinals, we played really well to win the 3rd and 4th place match up. The season as a whole was great since I feel like we got better as the season went on. We had some matches where we didn’t play our best in the middle of the season, but by Districts, Sectionals and State, we were playing our best tennis,” Yin said.
Girls Volleyball
The Lady Lancers have swept their way to District Finals. In the Quarter-finals, they swept Parkway South and in the Semi-finals, they swept Cor Jesu. For the final, they will play Rockwood rivals Marquette at Nerinx Hall, Oct. 24. The game will take place at 6:00 p.m. The last time they played the Mustangs, the Lady Lancers swept them. With a 32-2 record, the Lady Lancers have not lost in over five weeks. Senior Alyssa Nelson thinks that their rivalry game will be different than normal. “[Playing against Marquette] definitely makes the game more interesting. When you know the people on the team it becomes a bit harder. Because they kind of know what we are going to do and we kind of know what they are gonna do, so it becomes a balance of being unpredictable and limiting what they are going to do.” But Nelson is only focusing one game at a time. “We have been very strong this season so far. We have a District Final coming up tomorrow, against Marquette. If we win tomorrow, we play sectionals in Jacksonville. We are trying to win one game at a time, but if can make it to state finals again, that would be amazing.”
