Only four teams remain in the hunt for a spot in Super Bowl XLV. The men have been separated from the boys and the Bears, Packers, Steelers and Jets are all that remain. While the Steelers have won two Super Bowls since 2006, the other three teams are relatively inexperienced at this level.
All four teams are pretty evenly matched and anything can happen at this stage if the game. So who better to sort it all out than the Image sports staff? For both games, sports edtior Gian Wessel and reporter Sean McIntyre will tell you who they pick to win and why.
NFC: Green Bay Packers at Chicago Bears: One of the most historic and intense rivalries in all of the NFL finally makes a return to the big stage. The two NFC North foes square off in the playoffs for the first time since 1941.
- Sean McIntyre: I think the silver lining for the Bears is always the big guys up front. If they can keep Cutler on his feet, which against the Pack, keeping the quarterback’s jersey clean, has proven to be a tough task. Last time the Bears only managed to score 3 points at Lambeau. And this time the Bears have their offense rolling and it is being played at Soldier Field in the Windy City. I’m going kind of on my own with this one and picking the Bears. The best coaching staff in the league will guide them to the Super Bowl.
- Gian Wessel: Chicago may have beaten out Green Bay for the NFC North title, but I think the Packers are playing as well as anyone in the NFL right now. Homefield advantage will definitely help the Bears keep it close and they have a good chance if Jay Cutler can repeat last week’s performance. It all comes down to whether Chicago’s strong defense can contain Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and if they can protect Cutler from Green Bay’s intense pass rush. I think they will have trouble in both areas and that the Packers will take this one.
AFC: New York Jets at Pittsburgh Steelers: The Jets return to Pittsburgh where they beat the Steelers in week 15.
- Gian Wessel: I was shocked that the Jets beat the Patriots on the road last week, especially after losing 45-3 in New England just over a month ago. And since leaving Pittburgh with in week 15, they are clearly playing their best football of the season. But I just can’t see the Steelers losing consecutive home games to the Jets. They’re too experienced, too good at home in the playoffs and they have the better quarterback. Somehow, Ben Roethlisberger always comes through when it counts and I expect the same on Sunday. This game will be decided by how Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez handles Pittsburgh’s league-best defense. He did it once, but the Steelers are too good to let it happen again.
- Sean McIntyre: You have to remember that when the Jets beat Pittsburgh at Heinz Field, this guy named Troy Polamalu wasn’t playing for the Steelers. I agree that Mark Sanchez has to be at the top of his game (which isn’t that good anyway) for the Jets to have a shot in this one. Sanchez has gotten the “he managed the game well” tag for every week this season. Against a defense like the Steelers, managing the game isn’t good enough, a Super Bowl team needs an elite quarterback and Mark Sanchez is not. I can see the banged up Steelers offensive line playing a factor on Big Ben’s play on Sunday. The Steelers have been a team that pounds the ball on the ground, but the Jets have one of the best defenses at stopping the run game. If I could only watch one game on Sunday, this would be the one I would tune into. I think the Steelers have too much experience, too much talent, Sanchez turns the ball over a couple times and the Steelers are headed to Dallas to take on “Da Bears”.
