Student publication staffs win awards at fall convention

During the National High School Journalism Convention award ceremony, Lafayette student publication staffs celebrate their peers. The convention took place Nov. 10-12 in downtown St. Louis. “A lot more people on my staff came to this convention because it was here, which was different than other [years],” yearbook Editor-In-Chief Kaylee O’Dell said.

From Nov. 10-12, members of Lafayette’s student publication staffs attended the fall National High School Journalism Convention. The fall NHSJC was held in St. Louis this year at America’s Center. During the convention, publication staffs attended workshops and sessions. During these sessions, staff members were taught lessons that ranged from how to write sports writing to press law and ethics. Junior Samantha Haney was delighted to learn from the sessions.

“It was really cool learning more about writing and photography and things I have to do for newspaper every day, but in a new way,” Haney said.

Freshman Samuel Walowitz was also impressed by the presenters who taught the sessions and workshops.

“A lot of [the presenters] had a sense of humor and they carried themselves really well. All their presentations flowed really well,” Walowitz said.

Additionally, staff members were given the opportunity to compete in contests at the convention. Overall, the staffs earned 24 individual awards. Additionally, both The Image and The Legend were recognized.

The Legend was inducted into the National Scholastic Press Association Hall of Fame. To qualify for the NSPA Hall of Fame, publications must earn 10 All-American ratings from the NSPA Critique Service within an 11-year span. The Legend earned All-American ratings in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 (induction year postponed due to the pandemic), 2019, 2020 and 2021.
