Growing up across the street from Lafayette, former MLB player and Class of 2009 alum Luke Voit has had a very successful career in the Major Leagues, playing for teams like the Saint Louis Cardinals and the New York Yankees. On Friday, Jan. 10, Voit attended the Fireside Chat, an event hosted by Lafayette Baseball, to talk about his journey to The Show along with former Cardinal Matt Adams and Fox 2 News’ Martin Kilcoyne.
The Lancer Feed had the opportunity to have a one-on-one interview with Luke Voit to ask questions about his formative years at Lafayette and how his time here eased his transition into college and professional baseball.
How do you feel about representing Lafayette on the professional level?
“I got to play for the team I grew up rooting for. It’s probably the smallest chance in the world that that would ever happen. It happened to me and I’m truly blessed. It is one of the coolest feelings walking out of the dugout to a stadium I grew up going to with my family,” Voit said.
How did Lafayette prepare you for Major League play?
“I grew up across the street from Lafayette and went to games watching Ryan Howard and David Freese. It’s cool to have those types of people that have achieved the ultimate goal”
What was the best piece of advice you were given during your time at Lafayette that you have carried with you throughout your career?
“I had some great coaches and they would always push me to make that next step and to learn from my mistakes. Even though I probably ran too many sprints because of Coach Miller, it’s important to learn that you have work hard or even work harder than the guy next to you to achieve your dreams”
