Club Spotlight: Philosophy Club inspires and sets tone for future meetings

On Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 3:15p.m., the first Philosophy Club meeting took place.

30 students attended, most of them seniors, and discussed the philosopher of the week, Socrates.

On this first meeting, Jeff Landow, language arts teacher, gave a brief summary and background of philosophy before discussing one of his favorite philosophers, Socrates.

“I love Socrates,” Landow said, “I think his brand of skepticism is really admirable.”

Landow was a philosophy minor, so when senior Asa Royal asked him to sponsor philosophy club, Landow accepted right away.

Towards the end of the year last year, Royal gathered a group of friends to discuss philosophy and debate various aspects of philosophy.

“Last year, there was nobody. There were just seven dilatants (amateurs) sitting around using big words,” Royal said.

Both Landow and Royal were surprised at the number of people who showed up for the first meeting.

Because of the number of members, Landow implemented a raising of the hand policy and decided to break out in small groups rather than one large classroom discussion.

At the next meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 3:15p.m. Royal will be following up on Socrates and his philosophy. Students will also have another chance to give their input.

Meetings will be every other Wednesday from 3:15-4:15p.m. Students are welcome to come and go as they wish.
