Club Spotlight: Be the Change established as spin-off of Challenge Day

Starting last year, Be the Change is a new club that hopes to spread its message to everyone.

Many students remember last year’s Challenge Day, or at least heard the stories of what happened on that day. Almost any student who attended the Challenge Day would agree that it was an eye-opening experience.

Due to the success of the Challenge Day, it was decided that the mission should be carried on.

James Waeckerle, teacher sponsor of Be the Change, said, “Be the Change was started as an extension of the Challenge Day that occurred last year.”

However, the club is not exclusive, and all students are welcome.

Waeckerle further explains that the club is not only for those who attended last year’s Challenge Day but also for students who want to make a positive difference at school.

Many students may not understand what last year’s Challenge Day was, mostly due to the fact that only a number of students were invited.

Being a spin-off of Challenge Day, Be the Change has a similar goal that all students will learn to accept diversity.

Waeckerle said the goal of Be the Change, “Is to create an atmosphere at Lafayette where ALL students feel respected, loved and celebrated.”

Nonetheless, another question remains: How did these students get invited to attend the Challenge Day?

“Some of the participants were chosen because they applied to participate,” Waeckerle explained, “and the rest were chosen based on recommendations.”

Waeckerle also informed that there will be another Challenge Day this year on Sept. 18.

Be the Change meetings will begin soon. If students want to get involved with Be the Change, they can contact Mr. Waeckerle or club leaders: Jalyn Henderson, Janea Rucker, Garrett Thompson, and Brooke Bonderer.
