Another year, another State championship. On Oct. 29, the varsity girls volleyball team came out on top against Francis Howell to capture their sixth straight State title.

The previous record holder was Incarnate Word Academy from 1983-1987 when they won five straight State championships, but now Lafayette has swept them under the rug and has now embedded themselves in the history books.

The team played in a round robin style of play and won five of the six sets that they played. They faced Francis Howell in the final match.

After a devastating 20-25 first set loss, the team had their backs against the wall. Then after going down 23-20 in the second set, things were looking grim until the team won 7 of the next 10 points to tie the match up at one set a piece.

“As coaches we tried to remain calm and just keep encouraging the girls to keep playing hard,” Head Coach Zach Young said. “We thought if we did that, then we’d have our chances.  The team played with so much heart and as coaches, we’re so proud of them.  They definitely earned this State championship!”

The Lady Lancers captured the title when they won the final set 25-21 and brought home the hardware.

Three seniors will be moving on from the program this year. Among those are Hannah Flowers, Mell Flowers (no relation to Hannah) and Emelie Orlando.

“Our seniors this year did a great job leading by example. Hannah Flowers, Mell Flowers, and Emelie Orlando are not only great players but also great people,” Young said. “I also want to give a shout out to a senior manager, Lydia Kemmerling, who has been vital to our success doing a lot of work behind the scenes. Our program is better because of every one of these seniors coming through. We’re very happy we could send them out on a winning note, they deserve it.”

Despite the teams seniors moving on, there are nine juniors, seniors next year, who will look to continue the legacy next year.
