As spring begins, several sports start, meaning that volleyball is back. Lafayette Lancer Boys Volleyball are motivated for another strong run, and on track for another stellar win-loss record.
The team is led by returning seniors Miles Gagnepain, Nick Lavanchy, Drew Linsenbardt, DJ Moll and Nathan Peiper, who were key parts of last year’s 30-7-4 team that came second at state. Several other members return for next season as well, including the team’s two tallest players, Clayton Mathison and Justin Houldsworth, who are 6’5 and 6’4 respectively.
Statistically, in many attacking and serving categories, Lafayette were one of the best in the state. Last year’s leader in number of serves was Logan Coffman, who served 404 times with an 89.11 percent success rate. Coffman also was statistically the best at assisting in the area. In 87 games played Coffman managed to get 951 assists, good enough for first in the St. Louis area and also 152 assists ahead of second place. Another leader from last year Lavanchy, in 87 games played, managed to get 454 digs, also the highest amount in the St. Louis area.
The return of most of the team’s players means that they’re in a prime position to do just as good, or even better than last year.
While discussing the team’s goals entering the season, Coffman said, “Last year we ended up second in state. Our expectation is to get back there and finish the best we can.”
Lafayette’s first scheduled game is 5:30 p.m. at Rockwood Summit High School on March 29.
