History repeats itself: Lancers drop to 1-2 after Kirkwood loss

Arpan Das, Sports Reporter

Overall, it was a terrible day for the Lafayette Lancers. They haven’t beaten the Kirkwood Pioneers in high school football since 2008, a drought that unfortunately still remains.

They lost 37-12 in a performance that lacked positive consistency. The defense gave up 34 unanswered points and were never able to recover from the deficit. Down 34-0 until the late third quarter, the Lancers scored two touchdowns of their own, both with missed two point conversions before giving up one final field goal.

The Lancers passed for a team total of 192 passing yards on a team completion percentage of 45 percent (14/31 passing). The rushing offense was also inefficient, as the Lancers only managed 3.13 yards per carry and only had 50 rushing yards. However, there was an offensive improvement, as the Lancers did not throw a single interception.

Coby Brown was all over the place, managing a game leading ten solo tackles. He was one of the lone bright spots in an otherwise miserable game for Lafayette.

Statistically, the Lancer defense was less than stellar. They gave up 493 yards of total offense, 303 passing and 190 rushing. This is the first game where the Lancers have given up significant passing yards this season.

“Well I’d say that maybe our secondary panicked a little bit, we weren’t really ready for the deep passes and stuff like that,” Brown said.

Lafayette’s next game is against the Lindbergh Flyers. The Flyers are 1-2 like the Lancers, but have lost both of their previous games by 40 and 41 points.

“Lindbergh has a new coaching staff, and they should be better than the Lindbergh we faced a couple years ago, but I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a good battle and we should come out with the win,” Brown said.

The game is on Friday Sept. 9 at home. Game time is 7 p.m.
