Legend staffers pick up National Pacemaker Finalist award at convention

April 27, 2015

Eight members from the Legend and Image staffs recently returned from the National Scholastic Press Association Spring Conference in Denver. Colorado. At the event from April 14-19 both publications placed in the Best of Show competition, with the  Legend, the Lafayette yearbook, placing eighth and the Image, Lafayette’s newspaper, placing sixth for their respective categories.

“Denver was really fun. Both the newspaper and the yearbook placed in Best of Show. We all got to come home with a win. It was a bonding experience for all of us,” Jessica Collins, junior and Image staffer said.

Along with the awards The Image and The Legend won at the convention, Collins is excited about all of the new ideas she learned participating in lectures and lessons.

“The best part about going to Denver was all the information we were able to develop for newspaper and yearbook next year. We learned a lot of cool stuff that I’m looking forward into trying with the paper.” Collins said.

The main reason for the trip was for the yearbook staff members to be recognized for being names a National Pacemaker Finalist for the 2014 edition of the Legend. Pacemaker Awards are given to the top publications nationally for coverage and content, writing and editing, photography and design. This was the first time in the history of the yearbook that it was named a finalist.
